Silicon metal, also known as crystalline silicon or industrial silicon, is a product smelted from quartz and coke in an electric furnace. The main component silicon content is about 97-99%, and the remaining impurities are iron, aluminum, calcium, etc. The classification of metal silicon is usually classified according to the content of the three main impurities of iron, aluminum and calcium contained in metal silicon. According to the content of iron, aluminum and calcium in metal silicon, metal silicon can be divided into different grades such as 553, 441, 411, 421, 3303, 3305, 2202, 2502, 1501, 1101 and so on. (For example, the content of iron in 421# metal silicon is not more than 0.4%, the content of aluminum is not more than 0.2%, and the content of calcium is not more than 0.1%).
In 2020, the global silicon metal production capacity will be 6.23 million tons, of which China’s production capacity will be 4.82 million tons, accounting for 77%; foreign production capacity will account for 1.41 million tons, accounting for 23%. In 2020, the global silicon metal output will be 3.03 million tons, of which China will produce 2.1 million tons, with an operating rate of 44%; foreign output will be 930,000 tons, with an operating rate of 66%.
In 2020, China’s silicon metal production capacity is 4.82 million tons, but the actual effective operating capacity is about 3.5 million tons, and the output is 2.1 million tons. The nominal operating rate is 44%, but the actual operating rate is about 60%. Exports were 600,000 tons and apparent consumption was 1.5 million tons. The three major downstreams of metal silicon are mainly used for organosilicon, polysilicon, and aluminum alloys. In 2020, the global demand for organosilicon, polysilicon, and aluminum alloys will be 1.26 million tons, 660,000 tons, and 1.06 million tons, accounting for 41.6%, 21.8%, and 35.0% respectively %. In 2020, domestic organic silicon, polysilicon, and aluminum alloy demand will be 660,000 tons, 490,000 tons, and 450,000 tons, accounting for 40%, 30%, and 28% respectively.
According to statistics from the Silicon Industry Branch, domestic industrial silicon production from January to June 2021 was 1.144 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 26.3%, and domestic consumption in the first half of the year was 887,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 14.6%. Among them, the consumption of aluminum alloy was 219,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 23.1%; the consumption of organic silicon was 374,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 17.1%, and the consumption of polysilicon was 261,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.0%. An increase of 42.2%. In the first half of 2021, the prices of domestic industrial silicon 553# and 441# are 13,005 yuan/ton and 13,720 yuan/ton, respectively, up 19.6% and 15.5% year-on-year. The strong downstream demand in the first half of the year led to an extremely low level of inventory. In the second half of the year, the demand for aluminum alloys and organic silicon will remain relatively stable, and the demand for polysilicon will increase slightly.
