In the raw material acceptance standard of the ceramic industry, the content of Fe2O3 is an index to be strictly controlled. The main reason is that the mixing of Fe2O3 will bring many problems to the ceramic production process, seriously affecting the yield rate and product quality rate. The content of Fe2O3 will cause the following problems in ceramic production:
1. The Fe2O3 content affects the whiteness of the product.
Take the production environment where the oxidizing flame of a roller kiln at 1200°C is rapidly firing antique bricks as an example: when firing clay test cakes, the content (mass fraction) of Fe2O3 in soda feldspar is yellowish white at 1%, red at 5%, and dark red or even brown at 8%.
In reducing flame firing, it is easy to turn cyan or even black due to the influence of Fe2O3 in sodium feldspar.
Therefore, no matter the change in kiln temperature or atmosphere, it is easy to cause color differences. In ceramic products that pay attention to the whiteness of the ceramic embryo, the iron content in raw materials and the production process must be strictly controlled.
2. The Fe2O3 content affects the refractoriness.
In ceramic formulations, as the content of Fe2O3 in albite powder increases, the refractoriness will drop sharply. As a result, the firing temperature range of the product is narrowed, causing a series of unfavorable problems such as deformation, inconsistent size, reduced strength, and increased brittleness.
3. If the Fe2O3-containing impurities exist in the ceramic embryo in the state of small particles, it will cause many surface defects after firing, such as black spots, melting holes, air bubbles, glaze slag, etc.
