Classification of Ferrosilicon Nitride

Ferrosilicon nitride can be categorized into two types based on its application: refractory ferrosilicon nitride and steelmaking ferrosilicon nitride.

Refractory ferrosilicon nitride for commercial use is a powdery substance of gray-white (or tan-brown) color, while steelmaking ferrosilicon nitride is granular and gray-white.

Refractory ferrosilicon nitride can be further classified based on its characteristics into refractory ferrosilicon nitride and high-purity refractory ferrosilicon nitride.

Similarly, steelmaking ferrosilicon nitride can be classified into ordinary steelmaking ferrosilicon nitride and high-purity steelmaking ferrosilicon nitride.

Ferrosilicon nitride powder is primarily used in the taphole mud of large blast furnaces, with small amounts used in iron ditch material or other amorphous refractory materials.

Ferrosilicon nitride granular is mainly used in the production of oriented silicon steel or other steels (such as HRB400 reinforced steel) that utilize nitrides to enhance strength.

Advantages of Ferrosilicon Nitride

Ferrosilicon nitride, containing the Si3N4 phase, possesses excellent properties such as high refractoriness, good erosion resistance, high mechanical strength, good thermal shock resistance, low thermal expansion rate, and high oxidation resistance. Additionally, its Fe plastic phase contributes to good sintering performance.

Applications of Ferrosilicon Nitride

Ferrosilicon nitride is an emerging high-quality refractory material that can replace the higher-priced silicon nitride for water-free taphole mud in large blast furnaces.

In the steelmaking industry, ferrosilicon nitride serves as a deoxidizer, adjusting the chemical composition of steel to improve its quality. It is used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking production, reacting with oxygen in the molten steel to produce nitrogen gas (N2) and release heat. The generated nitrogen gas removes oxygen from the molten steel, further reducing its oxygen content. Moreover, ferrosilicon nitride can be used to adjust the chemical composition of steel, enhancing its quality.

In the non-ferrous metal industry, ferrosilicon nitride is employed as an alloying agent and deoxidizer during the smelting process. Adding ferrosilicon nitride to molten metal produces corresponding metal nitrides, improving the strength, hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the metal material.
