Description of Ferromanganese

Ferromanganese(Fe-Mn) is made by smelting manganese ore in a blast furnace or electric furnace. it is a commonly used deoxidizer in the steel industry, and manganese can also desulfurize and reduce the harmful effects of sulfur. Therefore, almost all kinds of steel and cast iron contain a certain amount of manganese. As an important alloying agent ferro manganese is also widely used in alloy steels such as structural steel, tool steel, stainless heat-resistant steel, and wear-resistant steel. The manganese element is essential in the steel industry. About 80% of manganese is used as a steelmaking deoxidizer, which can refine the grain of steel and improve the hardenability of steel; Manganese is also commonly used as an alloying agent to enhance the atmospheric corrosion resistance and improve the forge ability and roll ability of the steel. Wear-resistant high-manganese steel is widely used in the production of equipment components for excavators and crushers. When smelting stainless steel, manganese can replace the scarce metal nickel.

Classification of Ferro Manganese

Main categories of ferromanganese alloys: high-carbon ferromanganese (2.0%-7%C), medium-carbon ferromanganese(0.7%-2.0%C), and low-carbon ferromanganese(0.7%C).

High-carbon ferromanganese contains a small number of trace elements in addition to its main components: manganese and iron. Compared with other ferromanganese, high-carbon ferromanganese contains more carbon.

High-carbon ferromanganese is mainly produced in blast furnaces and is widely used in steelmaking. Besides, high-carbon manganese ferrosilicon can also be used as a deoxidizer, desulfurizer, and alloying agent during steelmaking.

High-carbon ferromanganese produced in electric furnaces is mainly used for casting as a deoxidizer, desulfurizer, and alloying additive. High-carbon ferromanganese is mainly added during casting.

Medium-carbon ferromanganese is mainly an alloy composed of manganese and iron. Silicomanganese alloy is a deoxidizer and alloying material most used in steelmaking. It uses manganese ore as raw material and is smelted in blast furnaces and electric furnaces. Medium carbon ferromanganese is the main raw material for the production of stainless steel, high-temperature heat-resistant steel, structural steel, tool steel, and other special steel and welding rods.

Low-carbon ferromanganese constitutes approximately 80% of manganese and 1% of carbon with lower contents of sulfur, phosphorous, and silicon. Low-carbon ferromanganese is mostly used in the welding industry. It is an essential ingredient for making high-strength low-alloy steel and stainless steel.

Application of Ferromanganese

1. Steel industry: Ferro manganese as deoxidizer and desulfurizer in the steelmaking industry. High-quality steel needs to be deoxidized and desulfurized during smelting, but this procedure will increase the cost of steel making. Fe-Mn is a cheap deoxidizer and desulfurizer. It can refer to the removal of harmful substances such as sulfur in steel, and effectively reducing the content of harmful elements in steel, improving the quality of steel. In the steelmaking industry, about 3 to 5kg of 75% ferromanganese is consumed per ton of steel produced.

2. Foundry industry: Adding ferromanganese into cast iron can be used as an inoculant and nodularizing agent for ductile iron, and can prevent the formation of carbides, promote the precipitation of graphite, shorten the spheroidization time, and greatly reduce the form of impurities in molten iron, improved cast iron properties and quality. Fe-Mn can also reduce the blockage of the smelting furnace nozzle, effectively prolonging the service life of the smelting furnace.

3. Other industries: High-carbon ferromanganese or manganese alloys are used as reducing agents for the production of low-carbon ferroalloys. Ferromanganese powder can be used as a suspended phase in the mineral processing industry, and used as a coating for welding rods in the welding rod manufacturing industry; high manganese ferromanganese can be used in the electrical industry to prepare semiconductor pure manganese, and in the chemical industry, it can be used to make manganese ketones, etc.
