Description of Silicon Metal

Silicon metal(Si Metal) also called crystalline silicon or industrial silicon is mainly used as an additive for non-ferrous alloys. Metallic silicon has a high melting point, good heat resistance, high electrical resistivity, and ultra-high oxidation resistance. Si metal is a product smelted from quartz and coke in an electric furnace. The main component is Silicon, other impurities are iron, aluminum, calcium, etc. 

The Classification of Si Metal

 The classification of metallic silicon is usually classified according to the content of iron, aluminum, and calcium, silicon metal can be divided into different grades such as silicon metal 553/441/3303/2202 and 1101.

Silicon metal 553 is a commonly used grade. In the metal silicon 553, the silicon content should be as high as 98.5%. The contents of iron, aluminum, and calcium are 0.5%, 0.5%, and 0.3% respectively. Silicon 553 and silicon 441 are mainly used in the production of aluminum ingots. Adding silicon metal to aluminum alloys makes them strong and light.

Application of Silicon Metal

Steel industry: A large amount of silicon metal is used for smelting into ferrosilicon alloy, and it is also a reducing agent in the smelting of many kinds of metals. Silicon metal can replace aluminum in the steelmaking process, improve the efficiency of deoxidizers, purify molten steel, and improve the quality of steel.

Aluminum alloy: Silicon is also a good component in aluminum alloys, and most cast aluminum alloys contain silicon.

Electronics Industry: Metallic Silicon is the raw material of ultra-pure silicon in the electronics industry. Electronic devices made of semiconductor silicon have the advantages of small size, lightweight, good reliability, and long life.

Chemical industry: Silicon metal is used to produce silicone rubber, silicone resin, silicone oil, etc. Silicone rubber has good elasticity and can be used to make medical supplies and gaskets. Silicone resins are used to produce insulating paints, high-temperature coatings, etc.
